Mommy Mode

I feel like I have been in "mommy mode" for too many days straight. I love being "mom", but sometimes I just keep going and going and forget I have pieces of me that aren't being fulfilled or I don't even know what isn't being filled. Between kid's parties and chauffeuring kids around town I didn't even realize I have not even read a book for myself in weeks until today.

Saturday, both kids were gone and I was alone for two hours. You would think I had a list activities of grown up fun ready to go. Instead, I felt lost and sad so I called my grandmother who pretty much laughed at me. I was calling her from a dark library parking lot with expired books in the trunk.

So, I went to the outdoor mall to kids stores and the bookstore. Just pathetic really. I ended up buying a crazy Halloween Felix inspired ceramic cat head. Even more pathetic. I was thrilled when the party mom called me to pick her up a little early. MOST pathetic is I was already driving there. Who doesn't know what to do with themselves for two hours? Who buys giant ceramic Felix the Cat inspired heads?

So in true mom fashion, I refuse to be caught in that predicament again. I'm going to have to come up with five things to do if I have no kids for two hours and report back with the results. I think they have to be places where kids are not even allowed to enter...I'll list them from common places to those I'd be embarrassed to be caught alone in....

1. See an R rated movie. I have not seen a rated r movie in a theater in over 15 years.
2. Call a friend and have them teach me card games at a bar.
3. Call a friend who has no kids to meet me at a restaurant bar.
4. Go to a bar alone for a drink (do women even GO to bars to be alone)?
5. Hit an adult store and pretend to be very savvy.

Maybe I'll just go to Sephora to play with make up. *sob* It should NOT be this hard!

I'm feeling like I need the *mostest pathetic award ever* to have 3 things on my list of five items that involve drinking.

When my kids are out of the house, I'll usually do one of three things:

1) Play XBox (I know - you're saying "loser")
2) Watch a movie from Netflix that doesn't involve animation or princesses (or a combination of both)
3) Watch Cinemax on-demand after dark (and knock off a 3 Musketeers from my calendar)

But you have good ideas too.

At least your xbox doesn't involve drinking. :D I do think someone shou.d break into your house and replace the musketeers with snickers and score bars.

When I get some alone time which is rare because I have 3 kids and 1 grand kid plus a husband who likes to spend time with me( go figure that one out...). But when I do manage to slip the gang I hightail it to the stables and spend time with my true love Dante my horse. We love going on long rides in the park. If its to late for ridfdng or the weathers bad I go to the gym and work out, or go to the tanning salon too work on my tan. Sometimes I read horror stories or go to lunch with a fried. Then there's meditating, watching a old horror film, tennis, long walks in the park or on the beach, and writing in my journal. No I don't have a shortage of things I enjoy doing, however I do have a shortage of time in which to enjoy doing them. Ah well maybe someday.
Dont feel bad i also enjoy meeting upmwith friends at a bar for a drink. My favorite place is Jekyl and Hydes in NYC. All the waiters and waitresses dress up like its Halloween and act their parts.Very creepy fun. Dehlia

Those are wonderful ideas. I haven't got a horse though... I really think I was caught off guard having alone time. I am almost never alone. It does make me feel panicky knowing that eventually both kids will move out and the biggest part of my self identity will be gone.

And yes, I should have gone to the gym. It would have been perfect timeing. Thanks for ideas that are good for me.

You are funny!

How about hosting a sex toy party? That's always fun!

(I sell sex toys btw ;))

Oh and another one! Watch The Sopranos on DVD if you haven't already. I'm hooked! We never had HBO so it's all new to me.

I understand where your comming from.I was in the same place about 4 or 5 years ago. It is certainly a scary thought to deal with, but its a good one, honestly. It serves as a catalyst to get you thinking about what you want for yourself and who you are as a person. Mother is not who you are it's just part of who you are. Its just that when the kids are young it has takes over everything and you forget about everything else. Now its time to start remembering you.
As for the kids moving out, they come back hahahahaha. There is no escaping them.lol

I did the same thing on Saturday. The little one was home napping with daddy and I took the big one to a birthday party. I dropped him off, walked around Target forever buying random useless stuff (hey, at least is was on clearance) then went back to the party and twiddled my thumbs until it was over.

Very sad!

Rebecca - I laughed SO hard reading about the birthday party. I have a HUGE feeling, I could have done the exact same thing.
